Youth Movement

Eugene, OR. An annual field day event for Native American middle school students across the state of Oregon, in partnership with the Warsaw Sports Business Club and the Native American Student Union at UO. Responsible for directing a 20+ student committee across four functions towards the final activation.

Context

Native American make up one of the smallest represented groups within higher education across the nation. in 2016, only 153 Native American students were enrolled full-time compared to over 14,000 white, non-Hispanic students (source: UO Office of the Registrar).

How can we inspire younger generations to strive for higher education while celebrating their diverse culture?

Youth Movement

Founded in 2012-2013, Youth Movement’s mission is to ignite a generation to be active, motivated and connected to the power of community. year over year, the team has added activities, educational materials and more to inspire participants to lead healthy and energized lives.

In 2017, Youth Movement was incorporated into a 501c3 non-profit with hopes of sustaining growth and expanding impact. To date, eight other universities have taken in the Oregon blueprint and have executed similar field days events.

Contributions

In partnership with a co-director, recruited and developed a 20+ student team across four functions dedicated towards executing fully-funded field days for 200 Indigenous middle school students across the state of Oregon.

Created project and teammate development plans with functional leads, ensuring personal growth and steady progress towards functional goals

Drove conversations with department directors and organizations on the UO campus to create an immersive experience for participants in alignment with YM’s core pillars.

Collaborated with various universities to lay foundations and guidelines for similar field day events, establishing a long-term strategy for empowering marginalized communities.

Impact

Executed the 4th, 5th, and 6th annual field days across the UO campus providing Indigenous youth with exposure to education, activity and cultural representation.

Raised +$15K in funds and sponsor packages over three years to keep all logistics of the event expense free for all participants and chaperones.
